19/365 - Wait

I am still here

Standing where you left me
When you closed the door
When you walked away

one
two
three
your footsteps on the stairs
and five more
down the front path

I am still here

Through the door I hear
the whine of the engine
as it turns over
and the crunch
of the tires
as it backs down
the driveway
and into the street

I am still here

And I'll wait patiently
with the last words you spoke
echoing in my head
"let's go to the park"
you said
as you clipped
on my leash
just before the phone rang
and you walked
out the door

I am still here
